Islamabad Mayor Sheikh Ansar Aziz, who belongs to PML-N, has been suspended. The mayor of Islamabad was suspended with the approval of the federal cabinet and the cabinet members approved the summary through circulation.

Mayor Sheikh Ansar Aziz has been suspended under the Islamabad Capital Territory Local Government Act for 90 days. The purpose of the suspension is to conduct a clear and transparent inquiry against Sheikh Ansar, while the Federal Ministry of Home Affairs has issued a notification after the approval of the Cabinet.

It may be recalled that Sheikh Ansar was elected Mayor of Islamabad in 2016. Islamabad Mayor Sheikh Ansar Aziz challenged his suspension decision in the Islamabad High Court.

Sheikh Ansar Aziz has challenged the notification of 90-day suspension on corruption charges and made the federation, interior ministry, and local government commission a party.

The petition seeks annulment of the notification of the Ministry of Home Affairs dated May 17, 2020, and suspension of the notification till a decision is taken on the petition and permission to act as mayor.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has issued notices to all parties, including the federation, on a petition against the suspension of the Mayor of Islamabad.

The High Court summoned the Secretary Local Government Commission for the next hearing on May 21. The court also sought a complete record of the suspension of the Mayor of Islamabad.
